London’s Sunday afternoon gathering for swing dancers to practice, share and talk shop. Lindy, Shag, Balboa, Blues, Charleston, Solo Jazz… all welcome!
Sunday Swing Practice is a gathering of swing dancers, held most Sunday afternoons. You are invited to our beautiful Kings Cross rehearsal studio, where we have a sprung wooden floor, huge mirrored wall, high ceilings and natural light.
This is a self-led open practice session – there is no class and no teacher. Social dancing, individual practice, trading steps, jam circles, private lessons, airstep training, filming and stretching are all encouraged, as we share the love and learning of swing dance. All levels of experience and all swing dance styles are welcome. Swing music will be playing throughout the session. No booking is needed, just show up!
When you arrive: go through the entrance on the right (sports centre), not the left (youth centre). Head upstairs and turn right to find the studio. If you have any problem finding us, the friendly reception staff can direct you.
Can I learn how to swing dance at Sunday Swing Practice?
No. This is an open practice session only – there is no dance lesson and no teacher. So you can only learn to swing dance at Sunday Swing Practice if you bring your own teacher with you! 🙂 SSP is really intended for dancers that know some swing or jazz dance already, to come and practice solo or with friends. If you are an absolute beginner and would like to learn to swing dance from scratch, we recommend you take our Swing Dance Beginners course.
What music is played at Sunday Swing Practice?
By default we play swing music in the background throughout the session, in a variety of styles, at a medium tempo range of around 130-190bpm. We play music at a volume that can still be talked over, not as loud as a swing party. If anyone in the room wants faster or slower, or something specific, we accept requests. We will adjust the music to the room, depending on what dancers are practicing that day. If you are rehearsing for a routine, you can request to play your routine song once, but not repeatedly.
I’m a swing dance teacher. Can I teach a private lesson at Sunday Swing Practice?
Yes! Private lessons are welcome. You and your student(s) must pay the entry fee at the door. Sunday Swing Practice is also a great place to do lesson planning.
Can my swing dance team/crew rehearse together at Sunday Swing Practice?
Yes, coming with a group is a great way to take advantage of Sunday Swing Practice. Grab a corner of the room and practice with your crew. Please just be respectful to other dancers, and know they have as much right to the space and facilities as you do. Note if you are rehearsing a choreography, you can request to play your routine song from a device once, but not repeatedly. So Sunday Swing Practice is best for working on routine fragments, technique, trading steps, filming, airsteps training and things you can do regardless of what music is playing in the background.
