Location
I had done zero dancing before, so I was pretty nervous showing up. But the teachers put me totally at ease and the class flew by! There were lots of different ages and mix of people there. The teaching was clear and they obviously have been doing this a long time, they know their stuff. And they are funny! They really made us all laugh. Will definitely be back and bring my friends. Thanks!
Frequently asked questions
What is swing dancing?
It’s a partner dance that is upbeat, social and a lot of fun! We teach the original swing dance from the 1930s and 1940s, called the Lindy Hop! Lindy Hop was born in New York in the late 1920s and became a worldwide dance craze during the swing era. It’s having a huge revival around the world now, and London is one of the best cities in the world to dance it. Swing dancing is done to big band swing music and it’s irresistibly toe-tapping!
Are these classes for adults?
These are adult swing dance classes. All ages are welcome!
What level am I?
Here’s a handy guide to the four levels at The Wednesday Club…
7.00pm Beginners: Want to learn to swing dance from scratch? This is the level for you! This level is for people that have never done any swing dancing before. You don’t need to bring a partner. We will rotate partners in class, so you will dance with lots of people – a great way to make friends! These classes can be taken in any order, so you can start any time and you can drop in to classes whenever you want. It doesn’t matter if you miss a week. Most people can expect to stay in Beginners level for 3-6 months.
8.00pm Intermediate: This class is for swing dancers who are already confident with their fundamentals. You should know your basic 6-Count Lindy, 8-Count Lindy and Lindy Charleston. You should be confident with your Swing Outs and Lindy Circles, and have some social dancing experience. The Intermediate level focuses on:
- Technique – polish fundamentals, build connection & make your Lindy Hop feel great
- Repertoire – learn all the classic moves & material every Lindy Hopper must know
- Style – explore styles & make your Lindy Hop look cool
- Confidence – get more confident social dancing at all tempos
Most students would expect to stay in Intermediate level for 6-12 months. These classes can be taken in any order, so drop in anytime.
9.00pm Advanced: This class is for Lindy Hoppers who are very confident with their fundamentals and are looking to challenge themselves with advanced connection, challenging moves, sweet rhythms, musicality and style. There is new material every single week for the Advanced level. Drop in any time.
What should I wear/bring?
Just wear comfortable clothes that allow for unrestricted movement. Jeans and a t-shirt (or anything similar) would be perfect. Swing dancers usually wear flat, closed shoes, so tennis shoes for example are fine.
Read our blog article all about swing dance shoes here.
When can I start?
You can start any time! These are drop-in classes, not a course. So start anytime and drop in whenever you want to. It doesn’t matter if you miss a week.
In the Beginners level there are new students starting every single week, so we will always teach the basics from scratch.
Who is the teacher?
Sharon Davis is a world champion Lindy Hopper and the director of the European Swing Dance Championships. She has taught Lindy Hop all around the world, from Australia to Sweden, Argentina to Korea. She is a passionate teacher and her enthusiasm is infectious. You are guaranteed to leave her classes addicted to swing! Sharon’s teaching style is friendly and fun. Sharon is the director of the Jazz Music & Dance Co.
The Wednesday Club also often has special guest instructors, including champion dancers, internationally famous teachers and legends of swing… all at no extra cost!
What will I learn in the Beginners level?
There are three footwork patterns used in swing dancing: the 6-count basic, the 8-count basic, and the Charleston basic. We spend about 4 classes in a row on each of these, so we cycle through all the swing dance fundamentals across roughly 12 classes. You can start at any time, and if you take 12 classes in a row, you’ll get through all the material. But you can also take these classes in any order and drop in when you want to. Most students stay in the Beginners level for 3-6 months.
What if I have to miss one of the classes?
Don’t worry! You can drop in to these classes whenever you can. It doesn’t matter if you miss a class, or don’t come to sequential classes. You can take these classes in any order and start any time.
When should I move up a level?
When you feel confident that you’ve mastered any given level, you can move up to the next level class, held in the following hour. Some students like to take both classes together for a while, to transition.
I’ve attended five or six weeks so far and what really impresses me is how much attention you pay to the students’ dancing and what great advice you give us. I feel I’ve already learnt so much in the few weeks I’ve been coming to the classes. It’s great how thorough and helpful you are while still being playful and making the classes very enjoyable.
